Jessica Swan (she/her)
LM, CPM, MSM
Jessica, a North Carolina native, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011 with a degree in psychology and promptly enrolled in the newly created MS in Midwifery program at Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA. While in midwifery school, Jessica was a student midwife with Eastside Midwives at Puget Sound Birth Center in Kirkland, WA. Upon graduation in 2015, she was hired on as a full time midwife where she practiced until June 2020. She has attended nearly 350 births and thousands of hours of prenatal and postpartum care. Jessica wrote her Master's Thesis on the use of the Laryngeal Mask Airway, a simple tool that can be used to improve neonatal resuscitation. As a midwife, Jessica precepted a dozen students and found that her biggest passion is teaching and helping midwives improve their skills. Since June, Jessica has been the Clinical Education Supervisor in the Department of Midwifery at Bastyr University where she oversees the clinical education of 30-40 midwifery students, teaches the clinical skills series and facilitates the practical exams. Jessica is also passionate about the development of community midwifery in Washington. She is the Vice President of the Midwives' Association of Washington State, the state's largest professional midwifery organization. She lives in Kenmore with her wife Chelsey, where they spend their spare time cooking, doing needle-crafts, gardening, and traveling to Burning Man and beyond.
